REMARKS
A great many paintings attributed to Watteau and described as “Mezetin” but without any image, are listed in nineteenth- and twentieth-century sale catalogues. But they generally cannot be identified with certainty as being after the composition in the Metropolitan Museum, especially since Watteau executed a number of compositions which feature this commedia dell’arte actor. Even though this picture can without doubt be linked to the New York painting, it is only a copy based on the Audran engraving.
