REMARKS
Essentially these two paintings are just copies after the Jullienne engravings of Watteau’s Saisons Jullienne, but significant changes were introduced. Both compositions were distended into a wider format, with increased space between the figures. This copy after L’Été is in the same direction as the Jullienne engraving, but the copy after Le Printemps is the reverse of the engraving.
One wonders whether these two paintings were originally executed as a decorative pair, or whether they were part of a fuller set of the Four Seasons.
