Paris, sale, Salle Lebrun, December 22-23, 1831, lot 78 bis: “WATTEAU (attribué à Antoine). Le colin-maillard; composition gracieuse de douze figures.”
REMARKS
Watteau’s composition, as we know from Etienne Brion’s engraving, contained only nine figures. The twelve figures present in this work allow the possibility that the painting sold in 1831 may have been after one of the variant, more elaborate compositions by Pater and Lancret.
