REMARKS
This painting should not be associated with Watteau. Rather, it depends on a composition by Lancret, his Conversation galante in the Wallace Collection, London. However, the reversal of direction indicates that the picture was based not on Lancret’s painting itself but, rather, the related engraving by Jacques Philippe Le Bas.
