New Orleans, sale, New Orleans Auction Galleries, July 28, 2018, lot 154: School of Jean-Antoine Watteau, Fete champetre, oil on cradled wood panel, unsigned. In a contemporary frame. 15 3/8 x 11 7/8”, framed 19 ¼ x 15 ¾.” Est. $2,500 – 4,000. Sold for $2,500.

 

REMARKS

 

This painting should not be associated with Watteau. Rather, it depends on a composition by Lancret, his Conversation galante in the Wallace Collection, London. However, the reversal of direction indicates that the picture was based not on Lancret’s painting itself but, rather, the related engraving by Jacques Philippe Le Bas.
