REMARKS
One can appreciate why this painting was classified as being after Lancret. The two seated women and the two children are based on François Joullain’s engraving after Lancret’s Le Concert pastoral. Even the fragment of architecture at the right—originally sheltering a statue—is taken from Lancret's compostioin. Yet the guitarist standing opposite the women is an invention borrowed from Benoît Audran’s engraving after Watteau’s L’Enchanteur. This type of borrowing from both Lancret and Pater betrays the work of a pasticheur, and one can easily imagine that at some point the painting passed under Watteau’s name.
