REMARKS

Nicolas Lancret

Nicolas Lancret, Dans cette aimable solitude, oil on panel, 27 x 18.5 cm. Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum.

Although promoted as being after a model by Watteau, in truth, this painting is after a composition by Nicolas Lancret, most notably Dans cette aimable solitude, his painting in Oxford. A comparison between the two reveals the great superiority of the Lancret in terms of the modeling of the figures and the skillful rendering of the stuffs. Also, the overall lightness of color sets the Lancret in Watteau’s era, whereas the darkness and gloom of the copy suggests a substantially later date, probably not in the eighteenth century.
