PROVENANCE

Munich, Hampel Fine Art Auctions, April 2, 2020, lot 381: "Jean-Antoine Watteau . . . Art des / GESELLSCHAFT IN EINEM PARK / Öl auf Leinwand. 59 x 113 cm.  Mit einem rot gekleideten Mandolinespieler und einer Gruppe dreier junger Damen, eine mit Gesangbuch, links dahinter ein weiterer Jünglng. Der Hintergrund erweitert den Naturpark in eine Flusslandschaft. Der Himmel mit rechts ansteigenden Anhöhen sowie einer Burg rechts im Bild. Die Farben der Kostüme in bewusster  Farbcomposition abgestimmt, wobei die beiden weiss gekleideten Damen von den jungen Herren in rotem Kostüm bzw. roten Umhang gerahmt erscheine.” Est 5,000-6,000 EUR. REMARKS

 

This picture is largely a copy after Charles Dupuis’s engraving after Watteau’s Leçon d’amour. However, there are significant differences. The copyist eliminated the statue of a nymph at the left and added a young man not present in the Watteau prototype. Also, the copyist changed the landscape background, eliminating the Venetian-inspired design and substituting a generalized parkland of trees. Given that the copyist was looking at a black and white print, he chose his own color scheme for the costumes.
