PROVENANCE

Munich, Hampel Auktionen, September 25, 2020, lot 116: Jean-Antoine Watteau Nachfolger, Portrait einer jungen Dame, Öl auf Holz. 48,5 x 37 cm. In vergoldetem Rahmen. Brustbilnis der Dame nach rechts vor Dunklem Hintergrund. Sie trägt ein weit ausgeschnittenen schwarzes Gewand, das im Bereich des Dekolletés mit Goldstickerei versehen ist. Dazu einen hinter ihrem Rücken verlaufenden roten Umhang, der mit einer Brosche auf ihrer rechten oberen Schulterseite am Kleid befestigt ist. Zudem hat sie im ihren zierlichen Hals eine kleine weisse Halskrause. Ihr grau-braunes Haar is sorgsam zurückgekämmt und mit einer blauen Schleife sowie kleinen Blüten versehen. Qualitätvolle Malerei mit starker Hell-Dunkel-Akzentuierung Kleinere Retuschen. Est. 2,000-3,000 EUR. Bought in.

 

REMARKS

This purported “portrait” of a young woman does not follow the norms of early eighteenth-century portraiture. Neither its dark background nor its emphasis on the woman’s décolleté seems appropriate to standard portraits of women. Likewise, her bland features do not suggest it is a portrait. The ruff around her neck and the large bow on her shoulder suggest theatrical garb of the sort that appears in portraits by Jean Raoux, Jean-Baptiste Santerre, and others.

 

But is the painting even from the early eighteenth century? Rather, it may have been executed in a later century, and may be an excerpt of the head and upper torso from a figure in one of Watteau’s celebrated compositions such as L’Amour au théâtre français. When one compares such a model with this picture, one realizes the gulf in quality between the two, and the impossibility of an attribution to Watteau himself.
