REMARKS

fig

Jacques Philippe Le Bas after Watteau, L’Assemblée galante (detail), engraving, 1731.

fig

Jean Michel Liotard after Watteau, La Conversation (detail), engraving, 1732.

The ascription of this painting to Pater is a standard mode of assigning the name of a known artist to an otherwise anonymous work that has apparent associations with the Watteau circle. But nothing in this work specifically recalls Pater’s manner. In fact, this picture is but a pastiche of elements borrowed from Watteau. The couple at the left and the four children at the right were all derived from Le Bas’ engraving after L’Assemblée galante. The couple seated at the middle of the composition, including the so-called Louis XV, was borrowed from Liotard’s engraving after  Watteau’s La Conversation.
