REMARKS

It was not known that the Vaduz painting had a copy, one which showed the actor full length and in a more extensive landscape setting. Depicting the figure full length deprives the composition of its original power.

According to a notation in the Frick Art Reference Library, on February 25, 1925, René Gimpel saw the photograph of this painting and attributed it to the school of Watteau, i.e., that it was not by the master himself. But at that time no one was aware of the Vaduz original.
