Pierrot content (copy 1)

Oil on canvas
50 x 68 cm
PROVENANCE
Frankfurt am Main, with Ernst Poppel (dealer). Advertised in Weltkunst, 30 (October 15, 1960), 14.
REMARKS
Although the left-right orientation of this copy after Watteau’s composition agrees with original painting, it is a very free interpretation of that work. The copyist has eliminated the figure of the seated Gilles, and has placed the actors in a vast landscape. In effect, he reduced the remaining figures so much that they are now only staffage relative to the large scale of the setting. The supposed "Watteau" signature on the masonry at the right is obviously false.

PROVENANCE
New Orleans, sale, Neal Auction Company, November 20, 2010, lot 520: Style of Jean Antoine Watteau, A mime Gilles with three companions, oil on canvas, Height 41 in.; Width 32 in. / Height 104.1 cm. Width 78.7 cm. Estimate 2,000 – 3,000 USD. Sold for $1,793 with premium.
REMARKS
This crudely executed picture imitates the vertical format of the painting now in Madrid. This vertical effect is all the stronger because the left side has been reduced; it lacks the Mezzetin who should be there as in Watteau’s original composition.
