Dans la famille de Jeanne Marie de Wendel d’Hayande née de Pechpeyrou Comminges de Guitaut (1825-1908), epouse de Charles de Wendel (1844-1906) ; Puis par decendance à Humbert de Wendel (1876-1954), fils du précédent ; Puis par descendance dans la famille. IN THE MANNER OF JEAN-ANTOINE WATTEAU, LA LEÇON D’AMOUR. This is a copy after the Leçon d’amour now in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm (inv. NM 5015).”  Est EUR 2,000-EUR-3,000. The picture sold for 5,040 Eur.

 

REMARKS

This picture is a relatively faithful, slightly smaller copy of Watteau’s painting in Stockholm. The grouping is tighter and less spatially open, and the foreground trees embrace the figures more closely.

REMARKS

 

As can be determined by the reversal of Wateau’s composition, this painting is based on Dupuis’ engraving after Leçon d’amour. Unlike most other copies after Watteau’s paintings, which are generally anonymous works of uncertain date, this picture is signed by Gaspard Gresly, who died in 1756. This places the painting between 1734 and 1756, only a few decades after Watteau’s death.

REMARKS

The information about this picture is too sparse to reach any conclusion about it or its pendant. Without a photograph, we cannot even be sure that it is a copy after the Stockholm painting.

REMARKS

This picture copies Charles Dis??’ engraving after Leçon d’amour. It is merely a commercial product for the decorative art market.

The pendant is not even after a picture by Watteau or his school. It is a copy after the well-known Les Charmes de la vie rurale by François Boucher in the Louvre. The pairing of copies after celebrated models by two masters—Watteau and Boucher—Is a not uncommon aspect of the commercial art market.

REMARKS

Although this picture copies all the princial figures of Le Leçon d’ amour, it has stretched them out into an awkwardly long composition. Was this meant for some sort of decoration rather than a formal, framed work of art?  It's support of cardboard also suggests such a function.
